Lenore Walker, Ed.D.,
has been in the independent practice of psychology since she received
her doctorate in psychology from Rutgers University, New Jersey, in
1972. Currently she is professor of psychology at Nova Southeastern
University in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. She has been president of
several divisions of the American Psychological Association, including
the Society for the Psychology of Women, Psychologists in Independent
Practice of Psychology, and Media Psychology. Dr. Walker has written
twelve books in the area of violence against women including the now
classic The Battered Woman, published in 1979. It was her
research that named the Battered Woman syndrome. She has testified
numerous times before the U.S. Congress and in over four hundred cases
where battered women have killed their husbands in self-defense. A
veteran of many television news shows, Dr. Walker has traveled all over
the world at the invitation of many countries trying to improve safety
and life choices for women and children. She has two grown children,
five stepchildren, and four grandchildren and lives with her
psychologist partner at the beach.
